Hawai’i County, HI
Vibrant Hawai’i, working in close collaboration with staff from Hawai’i County’s Office of Sustainability, Climate, Equity, and Resilience (OSCER) leveraged their robust network of resilience hubs to site stationary, long-term monitors on the Big Island in summer 2025. Hawai’i island experiences extreme variations in heat depending on wind direction and altitude - the windward side of the island, which is more well known to tourists, is cooled by trade winds, which the leeward side of the island, where many residents live, can experience hot and dry conditions.
After termination of federal support for the CCHM, Vibrant Hawai’i and Hawai’i County identified several approaches that allowed them to continue the collaboration, including providing support for CCHM staff to attend a Resilience Hub Summit and provide training on sensor use and installation.
CCHM is proud to continue partnering with Vibrant Hawai’i and Hawai’i County to understand how warming temperatures are affecting daily life on the Big Island.
