Yuma is known as the “sunniest place on earth,” and it’s also one of the hottest places in North America. In 2025, Yuma County Library District developed educational materials on extreme heat and provided cooldown kits to library patrons for hot days.

Yuma cooling kits provide relief during triple-digit heat

Salas said the kits are funded through a grant from the Center for Collaborative Heat Monitoring. They include items such as a water bottle, sunscreen, an instant cold pack and other supplies designed to help people stay safe in extreme heat.
